How to store potatoes
Choose somewhere cool, dark and airy to store potatoes – don’t keep them in the fridge. Keep spuds fresher for longer by keeping them in the packaging you bought them in, or in a cloth or natural fibre bag if you prefer. Store them away from strong-smelling foods, such as onions.
Keep cooked potatoes in the fridge
Whether you’ve accidentally cooked more than you need, or you deliberately cooked extra, store them right to enjoy them later.
Allow your cooked potatoes to cool and get them in the fridge within two hours. They’ll last for up to two days there. Eat them cold – maybe add to a salad for lunch – or reheat them until piping hot in the oven, microwave, frying pan, or grill – it’s your choice!
You can freeze cooked potatoes!
Place them on a baking tray – separated so they’re not touching each other – and put the tray in the freezer. When the potatoes have hardened, pop them in a freezer bag or container and seal. This stops them sticking together so you can defrost one at a time when you need them. When you’re ready to use your potatoes, remove from the freezer and defrost in the microwave or place in the fridge overnight, then reheat them until piping hot.
You can also freeze mashed potato. Separate it into portions and put in a freezer bag, reusable tray or container with a lid. Just make sure it’s well covered so it doesn’t dry out in the freezer.
