Zero Waste East Dunbartonshire is heading up a front-line attack on food waste in its locality in Scotland.
Since May 2016, the organisation has been working to put charities and community groups from their area in touch with the FareShare FoodCloud scheme.
FareShare works by connecting charities and community groups with surplus food from the food industry. People collect unsold food available at the end of each day that would otherwise not be eaten. Then they redistribute it to vulnerable groups in society. The food is given to charities free of charge, which not only saves food but provides a meal for someone in need.
What’s more, the process is very simple – the stores notify FareShare FoodCloud members by text message to let them know what food is available when they’re due to collect.
Across Scotland, FareShare FoodCloud has connected over 90 Tesco stores with over 300 charities. That all adds up to a mountain of over 1 million meals redistributed across the UK.
